Hârn: The Knights of Kaldor
The Miners are one of the wealthiest guilds on Harn, with a rigid monopoly on mining and the smelting of metals. While the guild own some mines, most mines are owned by the crown, and the miners are bonded to work those mines. In most kingdoms, mineral rights are exclusive to the crown, and are not parts of any grant of land that go to a tenant. So, if a baron or earl’s demesne contains a silver mine, he receive no revenue from it.
Because of this, miners have a number of guild privileges to allow them to operate outside the normal feudal law. They have the right to prospect on any lands, other than in temples, orchards, gardens or highways. They may cut timber without permission to use in mines or smelting. They can hold their own courts, and unfree persons who work on a mine for two years automatically becomes a freeman.
